Blue Bedding – Little Boy Blue

December 11, 2012 By Wanda Leave a Comment

There was a time when blue was used primarily to dress up a boys bedroom and in particular a baby boy’s nursery room.  But blue is not just for baby boys anymore, although that is still a lovely tradition.

Nowadays you can use blue bedding to compliment a myriad of themes. Soft blues are soothing and restful, and the perfect way to have your little lad go to bed – and sleep like a baby. If your favorite color happens to be blue, you have a lot of choices when it comes to blue nursery bedding.

Blue is also a good choice for dorm rooms. There are many manufacturers who cater specifically to the college crowd. AA comforter set in denim blue not only  looks great in any dorm room it is also very durable.

Darker shades of blue are often the staple color for ‘locker room’ bedding too – this is bedding with all of your favorite sports teams logos. Some of those popular sports teams include Duke (Blue Devils) and the Dallas Cowboys. Then there are those adolescent NASCAR fans who love bedding that features their popular drivers such as Jimmie Johnson, Rusty Wallace, and Jeff Gordon. These portraits are often featured on a blue background.

For adults who want a traditional look you can’t go wrong with a blue and tan striped set. This type of blue bedding also works well for people who are selling homes and need to stage their bedrooms as it’s a very classy look.

For a European flair with a soft look try a floral French Country theme in blue. If the ocean is more to your liking, blue seashells and water related themes or fishes will have you counting sheep in no time.

The wonderful thing about blue is that it’s such a versatile color. It plays well with others, and can blend with any color to present a peaceful oasis in a tumultuous household!

What is a Thread Count?

July 22, 2011 By Paula Leave a Comment

To the question, “What is thread count?” the number of threads per square inch is the simple answer. Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads used per square inch of fabric. This number ranges from 80 up to 1,000 or more. The common belief is the higher the thread count, the better the quality of the sheet, which in most cases is true (although the quality of the thread used has a significant impact!)

When determining the quality of a sheet, you must consider the material from which it is made, the yarn size, and the ply. Yarn size is the diameter of the yarn or thread. The higher the yarn size, the finer the threads. The finer the threads, the higher the thread count will be because more of them will fit in the designated square inch.

Ply is the number of single yarns used in a strand of thread. Single ply means the weaving of fabric is from a single thread. In two-ply fabric, yarns are twisted together before weaving occurs giving the final product twice the thread count. Two-ply fabrics must have a high yarn size (small diameter) so they don’t feel thick.

A thread count of 140-180 is usually a fairly coarse finished product. 200 is good, but a count of 300 to 400 is better. The use of multi-ply yarn in creating high thread count makes a difference in the feel of the resulting fabric.

1,000 is a very high thread count, but may not result in the softest weave. Multiple single threads being twisted together is how such a high thread count is created. This can cause the finished fabric to feel bulky. Generally, a 400+ thread count is the most comfortable for use in bedding.

Western Bedding – Go West!

July 22, 2011 By Paula Leave a Comment

When you think of Western Bedding, what instantly comes to mind? Horses and cowboys? While those are certainly options, there is much more to this type of bedding. You don’t have to live in the Wild West, either, to pull off this look!

Western bedding need not be masculine either. For girls who love horses, there are several options. Riding accessories, such as horse show riding hats and saddles, on pastel backgrounds make for a lovely decor for the horseback riding enthusiast. Do you have a little pony lover in your household? Dress up a room with some pony prints on the walls and a calendar to match!

Boys who love Westerns or like playing Cowboys and Indians will be sure to love bedding with rodeo, Western cowboy, or Old West themes. A log cabin design bedding with rugged scenery is appropriate for boys of all ages and will have them feeling like they are going to sleep in their very own cabin in the woods. Try bandana bedspreads on a rustic set of bunk beds for a bunkhouse effect.

For a unisex adult look, an Americana design in patriotic colors of red, white and blue can give any traditional bedroom a timeless makeover. If this look does not appeal to your feminine side, you can head a little further South for some lovely Santa Fe prints with wonderful shades of aqua, teal, tans and all the colors of the sunset.

The West means the glory days of westerns as well, so frame that print of the Duke and one of Roy Rogers, and toss a cowhide rug on the floor for a finishing touch. Western bedding can make any room a candidate for some cowboy meets cowgirl romance!

Tropical Bedding

July 22, 2011 By Paula Leave a Comment

Does the very thought of azure blue waters, warm white sands, and lush tropical flowers make you feel more relaxed?  Do you wish that you could escape from your everyday life and spend more time sipping outrageously colored drinks under the warm equatorial sun?  Even if you can’t spend as much time on vacation as you would like, you can still bring the relaxed atmosphere and wild beauty of the ocean and jungle in your own home, with tropical bedding.

Bedding that captures the unique beauty of the tropics is far different from the more standard pastel florals that are found in many comforter designs.  Imagine a bright orangey-red comforter accented by pillows boasting green palm leaves and red hibiscus flowers.  Top off the look with a striped bed ruffle that picks up the greens, reds, and khakis of your jungle theme.

If the ocean calls to you more strongly than the jungle does, you can pair a dreamy turquoise blue comforter with decorative pillows that reflect the colors of sand and sun.  A pillow shaped like a beach ball will round out the look while adding a fun flair to your room decor.
Are you dreaming of a trip to Hawaii?  Pair a raffia grass bed skirt with a coral-colored comforter and seashell-shaped cushions, and say ”aloha“ every time you walk into your bedroom.

To enhance the tropical feel in your bedroom, select furniture and accents made of beautiful rattan, bamboo, or wicker.  Paired with striking bedding, wicker furnishings will make you feel like you are ready to step out onto the beach, even in the dead of winter.

While you probably can’t whisk yourself away to the tropics every time you need a break from the everyday, you can create an oasis of comfort and serenity in your home with the bedding and furniture choices that you make.  With just a touch of creativity, you can bring the tropics home with you.

Safari Bedding – Take a Walk on the Wild Side

July 22, 2011 By Paula Leave a Comment

Safari bedding – the next best thing to being among the actual animals every day, and the temperature is always just right! If your kid is a ‘Wild Thing’ he or she will love a room filled with all their favorite wild animal friends!

Buys and girls are sure to love ensembles where wild animals hang out together peacefully on a background with lush trees. If your kids have a favorite wild animal, this kind of bedding would be perfect for them as well. Lions and tigers and bears.. And elephants and monkeys and zebras!

To liven up neutral walls and furniture, try this type of bedding with background colors ranging from earthy browns and tans to lush greens. For a more crisp approach, safari bedding for children is also available with jungle animals on white backgrounds. You can pick up the theme in a big faux fur rug, and throw a few safari prints on the wall as well.

Adults have many options to choose from when it comes to the veldt. For an African hunting lodge type feel you can try a muted tan animal skin type pattern. This look will also work well if you want to give a more traditional bedroom an unique, edgy lift, without going overboard.

For those with a still wilder streak, you can find safari bedding in different types of animal prints. Bedding with zebra stripes is wonderful for those who love the contrast of black and white and works nicely with modern type furnishings. Animal prints, such as giraffe and tiger, have a more neutral color palette – but there is nothing boring about them! Let your wild streak show.

Pink Bedding – Pretty in Pink

July 22, 2011 By Paula Leave a Comment

Pink – it’s the most feminine color of them all. It’s no coincidence that it’s still the most popular color for baby girls and makes you feel right at home in even the most traditional home setting. What better way to cradle your precious bundle of joy than in delicate pink bedding? Once baby girl grows into a curious toddler and beyond, chances are she will still enjoy this happy color. Whether she likes flowers, butterflies, fairies, princesses or animals, you are sure to find any of these designs in the most adorable shades of pink. Mix it up with a few different shades.

You are not limited to prints by all means, you can also try a monochrome scheme with bedding ranging in shades from pale rose to fuchsia and magenta. These are especially popular with pre-teens. You can also go bubblegum pink and dig the 50’s with style! A chrome headboard and hot pink bedding just screams retro.

Pink is also the proverbial color of romance and universal love. It is a quiet color of beauty, and there is no better way to drift off into dreamland than by being immersed in a fluffy pink cloud!

If your bedroom has a traditional feel to it, but you want to liven it up some, try bedding with pink stripes. If your home has a country theme throughout, bedding with pink flowers or of Laura Ashley design will make you feel right at home. Pink bedding will accent a bedroom with neutral colors beautifully. For a hot, modern look try fuchsia bedding to contrast with black furniture.

Remember, she’s always pretty in pink.
