Pillows were originally only used by rich people and have been found in the tombs of Ancient Egypt. With the use of increasingly sophisticated dyes and beautiful sewing techniques, pillows developed as an art form. Richly decorated pillows became highly prized commodities in China. Despite this, the traditional Chinese pillow is often a hard box made from stone, wood, metal or porcelain. Mass production of decorated textiles came with the Industrial Revolution

Some pillows are obviously past their useful life, but if you’re not sure about one, see if it will pass the pillow test! Put Your Pillow to the Test Put your pillow on a flat surface and fold it in half and hold it there with your hand. If it doesn’t fold in half easily, it’s already passed the test! Now place a shoe on top of the folded part. Let go! If the shoe flies off, your pillow doesn’t need replacing. If it doesn’t – it’s time to go shopping! As a general rule, it’s recommended that your replace your pillows every six months to two years – depending on how well they are lasting. What Type of Pillow to Choose
Synthetic filled
The most common synthetic used to fill pillows is polyester. It’s an inexpensive, man-made product. The advantage is the cheap price but you get what you pay for and synthetic pillows will frequently need replacing.
Feather and Down
This filling has been used for hundreds of years. The biggest advantage is that the filling fits to your head and neck, providing good support where it’s needed. A good feather and down pillow can last for between 10 and 20 years if looked after well. Protect it with a pillow protector and fluff it up daily. If the filling eventually flattens, it can be rejuvenated and topped up – or the pillow may be given a completely new case.
A strong material or high thread count is necessary to keep the feathers from escaping through the weave.
Memory Foam
This is visco-elastic polyurethane foam which is heat sensitive. At normal room temperature, memory foam is relatively firm. The warmth of skin contact makes it soften within a few minutes. This is why a hand pressed into memory foam will leave a clear handprint.
Wool Pillows
These are not high profile, which is a pity because wool pillows are great! Wool is a naturally breathing material. It deters dust mites and is machine washable. In fact, many wool pillow manufacturers recommend that wool pillows should be frequently machine washed and dried in a tumble drier to fluff them up! The wool filling is usually encased in a 100% cotton (often organic) case.
